The Spiderwick Chronicles - POV Review
By Nora Kirkeby
May 27, 2008, 20:24 PST

From the Spiderwick Chronicles series, came The Spiderwick Chronicles, one of this season’s most endearing children’s movies.

The novels were a set of books, probably appropriate for children as young as first or second grade. They’re magical in their details, and the monsters and creatures of the books have human qualities to which you can relate. Sadly, the stories are occasionally a little slow. In 100-150 pages, give or take, you can expect a handful of interesting plot twists, with a lot of introspective talk about how the children get along with each other and their families.

In comparison, the movie was anything but slow. Fast paced, the movie took many of good points from the books (albeit occasionally out of sequence), and blended them together with the same family values from the books. However, the movie didn’t drag, and the values were placed better, as a parallel plot that ran along side the adventure.

A family, stricken by divorce moves into the ancestral home that had been abandoned by their mother’s infamously crazy aunt. One of the twin boys soon finds a book called The Spiderwick Chronicles, set aside by the house’s original owner, detailing the secrets wonders of the faerie world. What he doesn’t realize is that there is a great evil seeking the book so that it can use the book to destroy the creatures described within it. The family soon has to band together to defeat the ogre and the goblins that seek The Spiderwick Chronicles.

I would definitely recommend this movie to any audience. For those of us who are a bit older, it is entertaining and heartwarming. For children, it’s a perfect adventure, with a low attention requirement. The animation is excellent, and if nothing else... in an hour or so, you’ll be completely entertained and the happy ending will leave a smile on your face.
